How to fix Acer Predator Helios 300 Freezing / Stuttering issue

So recently I bought the new 2017 edition, acer predator helios 300 equipped with an i7 7700HQ and a GTX 1060. At the price point of $1300 with import tax, there isn't really any other computer below $1500 that is equipped with a full 6gb 1060 model.

The build of the laptop is pretty neat, it does attract some finger prints but these can easily be cleaned the same way you clean a smudgy CD.

One of the major issues with it though was the apparent random freezing and stuttering that occurred upon starting up. The solution is somewhat tedious but necessary to ensure the laptop is usable.

Most Importantly: Don't update windows 10!!!
Updating immediately after opening the laptop is a recipe for disaster, as the updates seem to conflict with the nVidia driver. The solution is to install the nVidia driver (from the acer website) immediately upon logging in for the first time.

Here is the general set of steps to fix the problem:

  1. If the laptop is already freezing go to the system settings as quickly as possible upon logging in and select "Reset This PC", if you have got to the point where windows has crashed and are presented with a "start up error" blue screen, select advanced settings and again navigate to the "Reset This PC" button.
  2. Select "Reset This PC" and perform a "clean" installation (remove all files).
  3. Once this process has started it may take around 20-30 minutes to complete, make sure the laptop remains plugged in.
  4. After a fresh copy of windows has been installed, go through the basic startup steps.
  5. If you have already made an ACER ID you can leave this field blank and just click next.
  6. Log into the account.
  7. Open microsoft edge (don't install anything else just yet), and navigate to:
    https://www.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/drivers
  8. Select Notebook > Predator > G3-571 (if you are unsure about the model number check the box).
  9. Download the VGA driver from nVidia (Warning: Do not go to the nVidia website for this, use the provided VGA driver from acer).
  10. Extract the zip file to the desktop.
  11. Install the nVidia driver.
  12. This may take a while but after this your system should be more stable.
  13. Continue to download and install the intel VGA driver.
  14. If at any point you need to restart the machine make sure you WAIT while it installs and configures the drivers!!
Give it at least 5-10 minutes of black screen time before considering a hard reboot.
  15. For all the other drivers you may notice there are multiple different versions.

To determine compatibility, open up the windows menu and type "programs and features", then look through the installed programs/drivers and see which manufacturer they were made by.
For example my model has an atheros WLAN driver currently installed, so I downloaded the WLAN driver by atheros from the acer website.

Everything you install should be compatible otherwise you'll run into other issues.

  16. For the SATA AHCI driver, I selected the most recent driver available (since both are released for intel).
Ok so once you have updated all of the drivers your laptop should be in a much better and more stable state, some drivers will require restarts and again during this process your laptop might appear "black screened" for a while.

After this your laptop should be good to go 😀😀

As a side note, I would also go about uninstalling the acer bloatware after this and installing an antivirus application but again this is just personal preference.
